About Epilepsy
There are different types of epilepsy and seizures.
Epilepsy......
* is caused by abnormal activity in brain cells, seizures can affect any process your brain coordinates.
*has symptoms that vary depending on the type of seizure. In most cases, a person with epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time, so the symptoms will be similar from episode to episode.
* is a neurological condition that causes the brain to produce sudden bursts of electrical energy.
* is not contagious and can occur for the first time at any time, including during old age.
* is a condition of spontaneously recurrent seizures.
* is not a single condition, but a group of conditions with differing causes, treatments and prognoses
* is a disorder with many possible causes. Anything that disturbs the normal pattern of neuron activity - from illness to brain damage to abnormal brain development - can lead to seizures.
* may develop because of an abnormality in brain wiring, an imbalance of nerve signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters, or some combination of these factors.
* is not a single medical condition in itself. It is a symptom of a range of other conditions that cause somebody to have repeated fits, which are also known as seizures.
About Seizures.......
*A seizure is a change in sensation, awareness, or behavior brought about by an electrical disturbance in the brain, there are several forms of epilepsy.
*Seizures are characterized by a sudden change in movement, behavior, sensation or consciousness produced by an abnormal electrical discharge in the brain.
*A seizure can produce - Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs or complete loss of consciousness.
*Doctors classify seizures as either partial or generalized, based on how the abnormal brain activity begins.
*In some cases, seizures can begin as partial and then become generalized
*Only when a person has had two or more seizures is he or she considered to have epilepsy.
*EEGs and brain scans are common diagnostic test for epilepsy.
